The short answer

Most range hood problems come from the blower motor, fan controls, lighting, wiring, filters or ductwork, and most are worth repairing on a high-end unit. We test the hood in place, explain what failed and what fixing it involves, then repair it once you approve.

A range hood is easy to ignore until it stops working. Then smoke lingers, grease settles on cabinets, and the kitchen holds heat long after the burners are off. We repair built-in, wall-mount, island, insert and downdraft ventilation in high-end kitchens across North Hollywood, Studio City, Burbank, Toluca Lake, Valley Village and Sherman Oaks. Many of the kitchens we work in are built around a Sub-Zero refrigerator, with a Viking, Wolf or Thermador range or cooktop and a matching hood above it. Our focus is finding the actual fault so you aren't paying for parts you don't need. We are an independent repair company and are not affiliated with or endorsed by any appliance brand.

Issues we fix

These are the problems homeowners usually call about. Some are minor. Others point to a motor or control failure that will get worse if you keep using the hood.

  • Fan won't turn on at any speed, or runs at only one speed
  • Weak suction, with smoke and cooking odors staying in the kitchen
  • Loud humming, rattling, grinding or whining from the blower
  • Fan turns on by itself or won't shut off
  • Lights out, flickering, or working on and off
  • Buttons, touch controls or knobs that don't respond
  • Error indicators or blinking lights on the control panel
  • Downdraft vent that won't rise, lower or stop at the right height
  • Grease dripping from the hood or filters
  • Air blowing back in, or outside drafts coming down through the duct
  • Remote or in-line blower not responding to the hood controls
Technician testing the control board of a built-in refrigerator

What our technician checks on a built-in or professional-style hood

We start by running the hood through every speed and light setting and listening to the blower. A healthy motor sounds smooth. Bearing wear, a damaged fan wheel or debris in the housing each make a distinctive noise. We then check power at the unit, the switches or control board, and the wiring between them, so we know whether the problem is the motor itself or what's telling it to run.

For weak suction, we look past the hood. We inspect the baffle or mesh filters, the blower wheel, the backdraft damper, and as much of the duct run as we can reach. A stuck damper, a crushed or disconnected duct, or a duct that's too small for the blower can make a good hood perform badly. On downdraft units we also test the lift motor, limit switches and track. If your system uses a remote blower in the attic or on an exterior wall, we trace and test that connection as well.

How Sub-Zero, Viking, Wolf and Thermador kitchens differ

Sub-Zero is known for refrigeration, so in a Sub-Zero kitchen the hood is usually from a sister or companion brand, most often Wolf, or from Viking or Thermador. Each brand builds ventilation a little differently, and that affects what tends to wear out.

Wolf offers pro-style wall and island hoods, ventilation inserts for custom hoods, and downdraft systems, often paired with internal, in-line or remote blowers. Common repairs include blower motors, control switches or boards, and downdraft lift parts. Viking professional hoods are heavy-gauge units with high-output blowers and halogen or LED lights. We often see worn motors, failed speed controls and lighting faults, sometimes made worse by grease buildup on hoods that run hard. Thermador makes wall, island, insert and downdraft ventilation. Its electronic controls and downdraft mechanisms are the areas we check most closely, along with the blower.

Whichever brand you own, we identify the exact model before ordering parts. Hoods that look alike can use different motors, boards and lights.

Repair or replace a high-end range hood?

Repair usually makes sense on a premium hood. The stainless shell, liner and mounting rarely wear out, and the parts that do fail, such as motors, switches, boards and lights, can typically be replaced on their own. Replacement can also be complicated. A new hood may not match the existing duct size, mounting points, custom wood surround or the look of your range.

Replacing the hood is worth considering when parts for an older model are no longer available, when the housing is badly corroded or damaged, or when the hood doesn't move enough air for the cooking equipment below it. If replacement looks like the better choice, we'll tell you and explain why.

What affects the cost of a range hood repair

Every job is different, so we price it after we've diagnosed the hood. The main factors are:

  • The fault itself: a light socket or switch is a smaller job than a blower motor or control board
  • Parts: some components are stocked and easy to get, others are specific to the model or harder to source
  • Access: hoods built into custom cabinetry, plaster or wood surrounds can take more time to open safely
  • Remote and in-line blowers: reaching equipment in an attic, soffit or on an exterior wall adds labor
  • Ductwork issues found during diagnosis, such as a stuck damper or a disconnected run

How a service visit works

When you contact us, tell us the brand, the model number if you can find it (it's usually on a label behind the filters), and what the hood is doing. That helps us come prepared. At the visit, the technician protects your cooktop and counters, removes the filters and any access panels, and diagnoses the problem.

We then explain what failed, what the repair involves and what it will cost, and nothing proceeds without your approval. If we have the part, we can often finish the same visit. If it needs to be ordered, we schedule a return trip once it arrives. Before we leave, we run the hood through every setting with you and put the filters and panels back in place.

What to expect

How a visit goes

  1. Diagnose first

We find the cause of the problem before suggesting a fix, so you aren't paying for parts that don't address the real fault.

  2. Explain clearly

We tell you what failed, why it likely happened, and what your choices are, in terms that make sense without a technical background.

  3. Respect your home

Built-in appliances often sit behind custom panels and cabinetry. We work carefully around finished surfaces and clean up before we leave.

FAQ

Common questions

Why is my range hood running but not pulling smoke out?

Clogged filters, a stuck backdraft damper, a worn blower wheel, or a crushed or disconnected duct are the usual causes. We check each one so you aren't replacing a motor that still works.

Can I keep using a hood that makes a grinding noise?

It's better not to. Grinding often means worn motor bearings or a fan wheel rubbing the housing, and continued use can damage the motor or the housing further.

Do you repair downdraft ventilation?

Yes. We work on Wolf, Viking and Thermador downdraft systems, including lift motors, switches, controls and remote blowers.

Do you work on hoods inside custom wood or plaster surrounds?

Yes. Insert-style hoods are common in high-end kitchens. We open access panels carefully and work through the liner whenever possible to avoid disturbing the cabinetry.

How often should range hood filters be cleaned?

It depends on how much you cook. Heavy cooks may need to clean them every few weeks, others less often. Clean filters keep airflow strong and reduce grease buildup on the blower.

Are you a factory service provider for these brands?

No. We are an independent repair company and are not affiliated with or endorsed by Sub-Zero, Viking, Wolf or Thermador.
