The short answer
Most outdoor grill problems come from ignition parts, gas valves, regulators, clogged burners or worn rotisserie and infrared components, and many can be fixed without replacing the grill. Our technician inspects the gas supply, burners, ignition and controls, then explains whether repair makes sense for your unit.
A built-in grill is often the centerpiece of an outdoor kitchen. When a burner won't light or the heat runs uneven, the whole setup feels broken. Sub-Zero Appliance Experts repairs premium outdoor cooking and refrigeration equipment for homeowners in North Hollywood and the surrounding San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles neighborhoods. We work on Viking and Wolf grills and Thermador indoor grill and griddle sections. We also service the Sub-Zero outdoor refrigeration that often sits beside a grill in the same island. We are an independent repair company with no affiliation to any brand. Our goal is to find the actual fault, explain it plainly, and fix it so you can get back to cooking outside.
Issues we fix
Owners usually call us because of one of the problems below. Some are minor. Others, like a gas smell, mean you should shut off the supply and stop using the grill until it's checked.
- Burners that won't ignite, or an igniter that clicks without lighting
- Ignition that keeps clicking after the burner is lit
- Uneven heat, cold spots, or one burner running much weaker than the others
- Low or yellow, lazy flames instead of a steady blue flame
- Flames that blow out in light wind or go out on their own
- Infrared or sear burners that won't glow or heat up
- Rotisserie motors that won't turn, or a rotisserie burner that won't light
- Control knobs that stick, spin freely or don't adjust the flame
- Grill lights or electronic ignition that stopped working
- A gas odor near the grill or the connection point
- Built-in outdoor refrigerators beside the grill that aren't cooling or are building up frost

What our technician checks on a built-in or professional-style grill
We start with the gas supply, because many grill problems begin before the gas reaches the burners. We confirm the unit is set up for the right fuel, natural gas or propane, and check the regulator and supply pressure. We also check the shutoff valve and the connections for leaks. A grill converted incorrectly between fuels, or a failing regulator, can cause weak flames on every burner at once.
Next we pull the grates and flame tamers and inspect each burner. Burner ports clog with grease, rust and debris. Spiders and insects also like to nest in the venturi tubes, the tubes that mix air and gas before the burner. A blocked venturi can cause yellow flames or flashback near the knob. We also look at the valves, orifices and air shutters for each burner.
For ignition, we test the igniter electrodes, wiring, spark module and batteries or power supply. On grills with flame sensing or electronic controls, we check those parts and the related wiring. If your grill has an infrared sear zone, rotisserie or interior lights, we test those separately. In the Valley's dry summers and fall Santa Ana winds, dust and grit settle into burners and ignition parts quickly. Heat and sun also wear down wiring and seals faster than on a covered indoor appliance.
How Sub-Zero, Viking, Wolf and Thermador equipment differs
Sub-Zero doesn't build grills, but its outdoor refrigerators and refrigerated drawers are common in the same outdoor kitchens. Problems there tend to involve condenser coils clogged with dust and leaves, door seals worn by sun and heat, and cooling that falls behind on hot inland afternoons. We often check these units on the same visit as the grill.
Viking outdoor grills are heavy, high-output units, and many have infrared rear burners or rotisserie systems. On these grills we often see worn igniters, clogged burner ports, and rotisserie or infrared burner parts that have failed after years of high heat.
Wolf outdoor grills share the brand's professional-style build. Common issues include ignition components, valve and knob wear, and burners that need cleaning or replacement after long outdoor exposure.
Thermador is known mainly for indoor ranges and rangetops, and some models include a built-in grill or griddle section. Those cooking surfaces have their own burner, ignition and grease-management parts, and they can develop many of the same symptoms as an outdoor grill. We diagnose those as well.

Repair or replace a high-end grill?
Premium grills are generally built with heavy-gauge stainless steel bodies that last a long time. The parts that wear out are usually the ones that touch flame or carry current: igniters, burners, flame tamers, valves, knobs and rotisserie motors. Replacing those is often a sensible choice when the firebox and housing are still sound.
Replacement starts to make more sense when the firebox is rusted through, the body has structural damage, or parts for an older model are no longer available. It also makes sense when several major components have failed at once. Swapping out a built-in grill can also mean reworking the island cutout and gas connection. We'll tell you honestly what we find so you can weigh the options.
What affects the cost of a grill repair
The biggest factor is the fault itself. Cleaning and adjusting a clogged burner is a different job than replacing a gas valve or a rotisserie motor. Parts matter too. Some components are readily available, while others for older or less common models take longer to source. Access also counts. A grill set into a masonry or stone island, with the gas line and ignition parts reachable only through a small access door, takes more time to work on than a freestanding cart. We explain the diagnosis and the expected work before any repair begins.
How a visit works
When you contact us, tell us the brand, the model if you have it, and what the grill is doing. We schedule a visit and arrive ready to diagnose the problem. The technician inspects the gas supply, burners, ignition and any accessories, then explains what failed and what it will take to fix. If we carry the needed part, we can often complete the repair on the spot. If a part has to be ordered, we schedule a return visit. Before we leave, we test the grill so you can see the burners light and hold a steady flame.
